Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Ontario Premier Doug Ford will appear together in Calgary on Monday for a discussion focused on Canada’s energy sector and economic future.
The premiers are scheduled to speak at an Enserva event at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, where the discussion is expected to centre on how Canada produces, transports and sells its energy domestically and internationally.
This comes as Alberta and Ontario continue to promote the proposed Northern Shield Energy Corridor, a roughly 3,300-kilometre crude oil pipeline concept running from Hardisty, Alberta, through Saskatchewan, Manitoba ending in Sarnia, Ontario. The two provinces unveiled the proposed route in Calgary this past July.
Energy infrastructure, pipelines, permitting and industrial partnerships between Western and Eastern Canada are also expected to discussed on Monday.
Smith and Ford have not agreed on every energy issue. Last month, Ford supported potentially using Canadian energy exports as leverage in trade negotiations with the United States, while Smith rejected that approach. Both premiers have, however, continued to support expanding the movement of Alberta oil within Canada.
The event runs Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
